Chapter 11 in Culture and Technology was titled Articulation and Assemblage. Reading this passage for the first time was actually very confusing to me. It was in fact not until the lecture in class where I began to understand what Slack and Wise (the authors) were attempting to express.
The way I now understand the denotations of these words is “articulation” is single groups or points. Assemblage is the overall group that links the articulations into a cohesive web of reality. This whole process is what the authors call the “actor-network” web.
For example, in class we talked about guns. The articulations would be the NRA, liberals, conservatives, military and law enforcement and hunters. These were just a few of the examples we listed, however one can get the idea. We then linked each articulation by what affects other articulations. For instance we linked NRA with conservatives. Even though this is a generalization that does not always hold true, however one can establish the connection there. We then linked all other articulations to finally for one large assemblage about guns.

Favorite / Strongest Paper
We have written three major paper and one video presentation. Today's blog was assigned to discuss our favorite and or strongest paper we have written during the class.
The paper called "Mmm, Mmm Organic" I felt was the strongest I have written. However, the paper I received the most enjoyment from was the paper entitled "I'm Italian, and Not a Mobster; How Can This Be?"
Naturally I found this to be enjoyable, because I was able to research about my heritage and discover many aspects I was unaware of. I had the opportunity to discuss this problem with other Italians (mainly in my family) and receive other viewpoints. Having a strong sense of Nationalism lend to a strong feeling or pride as I wrote about my heritage as well. I also feel that it lead to increased motivation and stronger paper. However, not as strong as "Mmm, Mmm Organic."

Television
I started my homework assignment on Television and actually realized how expansive the web of television expands. At first I thought about entertainment aspects and how many hours are spent in front of the tube in my dorm alone. Now think about all of wilson. Now All of MSU. All of Michigan and finally all of the world. It is truly an amazing thought to comprehend how many eyeballs are constantly tuned into the pixels of television screens.
However then I thought about the news outlet forum. I thought how much of a tool the television is as an informant. To think that I get a majority of my daily news from television programs. The moon landing was broadcast on the television. Presidential elections announced on TV. Sporting events are remembered by the images sent over the airwaves. Tragically also, images of horrific events are put into the houses of everyday Americans. Visions of 9/11 are easily recalled to most because of television, and even more recently the Virgina Tech Massacre was displayed on TV. It is actually the outlet that I was informed about this tragic mass homicide.
There are numerous amount of anti-TV enthusiasts who blame TV for many of today's problems but really if you step back and view it as a tool, it is an extraordinary device.

Italian Media Portrayl
This coressponeds with the video below...
Following my paper entitled “I’m Italian and Not a Mobster; How Can This Be?” I produced a video that included my testimonial reinforcing the point of the constant negative portrayal of Italians in American media. In my video I also included stories and interviews supporting my point from fellow Italian family members. I made this video to enhance the fact that Italians are portrayed as mainly mobsters in media, giving the illusion that all Italians are connected to organized crime.
The way I decided to shoot the piece was very basic documentary styling. I wanted to utilize home backgrounds to show Italians in a much more realistic setting. I was hoping to show the people in the video, my family, as everyday family people. I wanted them to wear clothing that was nothing out of the ordinary. Finally I wanted to shoot them straight on and approximately at eye level to not hint being weak or powerful, but rather everyday persons. For the lighting I wanted soft natural light, and utilized as much sunshine as I could. I used my interview as the main source of information, but complemented it with pictures and other stories from my father and uncle. I interviewed others as well but their answers didn’t fit into what I was going for. As for the beginning I showed pictures alternating between the two biggest contributors to the problem: The Sopranos and The Godfather. I added movement to the photos to add a certain entertainment factor. The interlude to the actual interviews, is a famous clip from the first Godfather. I felt that this clip accurately shows what these characters are famous for and also is a great scene all together. Finally, the last piece to the puzzle, which is my video; the music. I decided on a classic old Italian favorite of mine, Stornelli Amorisi, by Claudio Villa. I feel that it complements the overall “flavor,” as well as providing a good backdrop for the entire video.
What I learned from filming this video, is that some people from my own family feel that this stereotype is not all that bad. They enjoy these films and feel that it is purely entertainment. However, they do recognize that it affected their parents and grandparents. I found out because of the negative effects that occurred to them, my grandparents hated these films and shows.
I feel that I had an adequate performance on this project. I finished the job, but feel that it was not up to my usual standards of my videos. There were a variety of reasons that it did not end up as a superb production. First off I had to learn and adapt to using iMovie. I have never used a video-editing program that was this basic. I usually use Final Cut Pro, which is the high-end version of Mac editing software, or AVID, which is the industry standard. I had to manipulate many settings and techniques to achieve my ultimate goal for the visual product. Other video projects for class intruded on the editing and filming time, along with restricting the amount of for interviews to be filmed. I also help produce a sketch comedy show here at MSU, and was required to put my time into the because of looming deadlines. The snow outside added to the distractions, because my other film shoots were scheduled for outside, and needless to say were cancelled and pushed back into this projects time. The answers I received, were not what I wanted or expected, therefore rendering them almost useless for my video. This added an element of trouble, because what I had originally planned out had to be changed in the editing room.
Overall, I am happy with my project. Is it my best project? No, but it meets the requirements and sends the message I wanted to express. The changes I would have made if I had extra time, would be to work on editing, but mainly focus the majority of my time to additional interviews. I wanted to interview the Italian language professor here, along with my grandparents or other various Italians in the community. However, without these extra interviews and editing time I still feel that it told the story that I wanted to tell.

Geraldine's Paper
In class a few weeks ago I was reading Geraldines paper and was genuinely intrigued. The paper talked about the misrepresentation the country of Zimbabwe gets because of this American projected image of bushmen in huts with little to no clothing on.
This stereotype holds true for all of Africa, but this paper pertained to strictly Zimbabwe. Geraldine is from Zimbabwe and is a white female who can speak english and wears "normal" American attire. How can this be?
She discusses in her paper how actually many parts of Southern Africa and Zimbabwe are populated by white citizens. This is because much of this continent at one time was a British Colony. She attended boarding school and lived in an environment where there were houses and "civilized" culture.
What does America portray this region of the world as though? A poor nation, who is populated by black bushmen killing animals that run wild on their land. We as Americans, and myself included until reading Geraldine's paper, heard Zimbabwe and thought of lions, giraffes and hyenas running in the vast dry plains of Africa.
It is amazing how wrong I was.

iMovie...complicated
I have come to the realization that iMovie is actually not all that is cracked up to be. I have never used it before, usually using a program that is more sophisticated Avid Pro, Final Cut or Adobe Premiere. However, trying to use it for the most recent project from WRA in effort to adhere to the requirements and to experience myself in a new application of video editing.
However, what I am dissapointed in, is that iMovie is very difficult to perform very basic tasks. The organization is confusion of clips and pictures. Also it does not allow for a clip to be editted without removing it from the "saved clip" files. This means that if you decide to edit a clip it will be removed forcing you to use the edits that are originally constructed. Also editting still frames or photos are difficult and require a preset "ken burns" effect to be enabled to allow for movement. However this feature does not allow for rotation of the still frame. I would much prefer to use a more sophisticated program, because, believe it or not it is more user friendly than iMovie is.
It comes as a surprise really, but a fellow Apple product, Final Cut Pro, is easier to manuever and edit than iMovie. However, the capture of raw footage is considerably easier to perform in iMovie.
In the end, it is harder to use iMovie in my opinion and also leaves you with a product that is not as "glossy" as a movie editted in Final Cut Pro. Either way, I will attempt my best to edit a video for class.

Hybrid Me
Taylor put together a presentation on Hybrid cars that started the wheels turning in my head. I was interested in Hybrids prior, but more or less cast the thoughts off when I saw the price tags. Even though, these cars are still out of my price range as a college student, they are beginning to lower come nearer to a possible purchase.
I come from a family who supports the Sierra Club and is constantly worried about the environment. These trends have stuck with my thought process and have made me increasingly worried about this imminent Global Warming.
I have recently read up on many of the new technologies that could possibly be the "next" car or the alternative fuel source, but not one seems as feasible in the near future as the Hybrid does. It can be looked at as a stepping stone or a gateway car to future cars that eliminate all gasoline use. It incorporates electrical power and gasoline. The fascinating feature which sets it apart from a pure electric car is that it never needs to be plugged in, because when driving the motor recharges itself.
This obviously leads to increased MPG and cuts down on both cost per fill up and emissions. In my opinion a win-win situation.
I would purchase a hybrid car if I can sufficient funds to support the more expensive price tag. I believe they are what will replace the common internal combustion engine driven car.

Brute, Buck and Jester
Today in class we had a graduate student present his report on the modern film. He focused on the "Top Ten" grossing films because these are the films that are most widely seen, therefore influencing the most minds. The way the presentation broke it down was by three main points...
The Brute - African Americans were overly physical looking to fight
The Buck - The characters were overly sexual
The Jester - The characters were silly or always getting hit and being put down.
He presented it by a PowerPoint first explaining what happened in the movies, then assembled a montage displaying each of the categorizations in the selected five films.
I completely agree with what he was saying and showing. There are several prevalent but subtle verging on subliminal themes that are consistently portrayed in the highest grossing films.
It was intriguing to me to see such a close comparison to my selected research topic of Italians in the media. Obviously the points are slanted towards an different goal but the inaccurate representations and how its feed to the masses hoping they will perceive it as factual is strikingly similar.

QSST
I have posted previously that explains my hatred for flying. I am getting better at cope with this phobia but still no where near have it habitualized.
Now add in the factor that this QSST (Quiet SuperSonic Transportation) is being explored and my fear is heightened ever so more.
True I would no longer need to be in the air for long periods of time, but add in the fact that I am moving around 1200 mph and leaving my screams far behind unable to hear from the sonic boom. The parts are all brand new and the design is innovated but not proven through vigorous tests.
May it is just me but this plane makes me want to stay in a car more. It does serve a purpose allowing people to travel half way around the world in single digit hours.
This plane is years away from production, and will not be used for the masses due to its 80 million dollar price tage and limited capacity of 12.
Great thought, will help others not for Anthony.

Italians In the Media
We have recently been assigned a paper that requires us to research a certain parts of our background that has affected our life in some way. Then with a part of our background we have to develve deeper into ona dn research how the media portrays that certain aspect.
I choose my Italian descent and how the media only portrays Italians as mafia members.
To be honest at a young age I was a kid that embrace this feeling of my ancestry was correlated with these rough tough beings. However as I have aged and became enlightened, I realized I was a manipulated youngster duped by the media. I bought into watching these glorified gangster movies and thought, these people are not bad, THEY AR E COOL!
Now I realize no they are not.
I am intrigued by this paper, because I not only get a chance to defend Italians but also looking deeper into this subject matter to better understand myself. Until I am done, and forever more FORZA AZZURRI and VIVA ITALIA.

Asian "IT" Tracking Device
DJ, a korean student attending MSU, presented a device that I believes that get it right. This is a system that coordinates a card, GPS locater and cell phone alert system.
What this basic setup entails is a constant surveillance of young children. It is a closed loop system that is between the child, parent and company. It has the features of immediate alert that can be activated by the child to alert the mother and company. This way if the child feels endangered he or she can pull down on the device and have help sent immediately.
This system has been linked with the school system so that children check in and out of school and alerts the mother. This way a worried mother can know exactly when or if her child leaves school or arrives.
The only concern with this product is that it could be lost and end up in the hands of a the wrong person. If this were to happen they, meaning the person who found the deivce, would be able to track the childrens movements.
I personally believe this is a great system that will soon catch wind and move across the pacific to America.

An Arab on TV, It Must Be 24!
In class we watched a short film that focussed on the frequency people saw Arabs on television. This short is called The Arab World: As Seen on TV, and can be found at http://www.otherart.org/media/arabs.mov. It sparked a thought in my mind, and I began to recall when I last saw a Arab on television. Quickly your brain moves to the nighlty news, where the War on Terror seems to reign supreme. However, now filter out the news and when is the last time a Arab was on tv? The only characters that appear to me, are Apu from the Simpsons and the Fox Show 24. These both portray arabs as a stereotype: a convience store owner or terrorist.
Now as I read Culture and Technology, a book written by Jennifer Slack and J. Macgregor Wise, I am informed of how Technology and Identity are intertwined. They discuss how Technology and Idenity are interdependent of one another and how both shape the other. They go on to talk about how certain traits are a greater or lesser factor in the overall scheme. The biggest countributor in my opinion is Profitability. They discuss how technology is motivated by increased profits. I believe this is related to how Arabs are portrayed on television.
As wrong as it may seem to ask, but honestly would a show with a predominatly Arab cast be succesful in America? No, it would not. Now is this because all arabs are terrorists? No it is just the unfortunate subsequent result of the awful events of 9/11. The portrayl of Arabs as Terrorists on television is merely driven by profits. It is not the hidden agenda of movie producers, that are looking for an outlet to release manifested anger.
The video titled the Arab World: As Seen on Tv is well edited and produces a very clear image of how misrepresented the bulk of Arabic people are protrayed on television. It is the capitalistic mentality of the nation we live in, where we are willing to sacrifice others to increase our quality of life, better worded as MONEY.

MoloGogo
Maybe I am just paranoid, or looking too far into the scene. It could be I am somewhat rebelious and enjoy personal freedom. Or it is possible that I do not enjoy having a device that acts as a tether for friends and online.
Thursday in class there was a presentation on a new phone that had an option that would ultilize GPS sattelites to pinpoint your position on the Earth. It sounds awesome and a cool new gadet that the "cool kids" will have. It will most likely be the new hip add on to the phone, and most teens and young adults will have it on their phone, but look deeper and the dark side begins to surface.
Anyone who has the Mologolo program, which is free to download, can see who is in the area, the state the country. It pinpoints a user on the screen within a few meters. You can set a feature that allows only your friends to view you.
To me this just another technology that is being marketed correctly to engage young minds. What it actually is however, is a techonology that puts a person on the grid. We as a soceity are moving towards a virtual world, where privacy takes a back seat. Just as cell phones did, now it is expected that everyone can be reached at all times. However, at least with phones you do NOT have to answer.
In a time with increased concern over online venues such as myspace and facebook, are we really interested in a techonolgy that allows the public to view your position? I s it just me, or does this sound like a child molestor's dream product? Think now, people can view your every move with out anyone knowing. Forget creepy adults, think about jealous ex's. Psychotic stalkers?!?
This is a product that has great potential when used correctly, camping trips or as rentals in amusement parks, but for public will act more as a tracking device for creeps than a useful location device for teens.
Parents, watch your child, don't let them be watched by others.

Vision
Today we had two presentations about two different technologies that I am indifferent about. The first dealt with LASIK eye surgery, which is now a fairly common procedure that corrects vision. The main positive about this surgery is it allows the patient to see clearly without the help of glasses or contacts. There are some risks involved and the results are not guarenteed to last. In fact there are some cases where it had deterotatied enough where the patient had to have the surgery again within a year. The other negative is the cost, which ranges from $500-$1500 per eye.
I have perfect vision without glasses at the moment, but realize that it will not last forever and glasses will be inevitable as I age. However, when that decision is needed to be made is when I become uncertain. I am not 100% sure that I would go ahead with the surgery. The thought of losing my eyesight still sits in the back of my mind. I realize the success rate is extremely good and that it has become fairly routine to perform. The pictures of the operation and the position that the patient's eye resembles a medivial torture device. The eye lids are spread apart and the eye is fully exposed giving the impression that they are in extreme terror. However, to counter it I have been told how I take the ability to wake up and immediately see for granted.
Perhaps I will only completely understand all of the components that attribute to the final decision to go through this procedure when I am faced with blurry vision. At the moment, I just feel that it is not worth the risk of losing all vision when I find immense entertainment in observing nature and film. However it could all change if I need Coke bottles to capture these images.

However it could all change if I need Coke bottles to capture these images.

iPhone...Tempting
There was a presentation yesterday in class talking about the new and highly anticipated iPhone from Apple. It not only is a phone, but also a camera and iPod. It also allows the user surf the internet with a variable viewing zoom. It looks to be the next technological trendy product from the savvy Apple. Until we hit the price. $499 for the smaller hard drive and $599 for the larger hard drive.
Ouch.
In my opinion this is wildly over priced. It does have all these feature, but none of them are outstand in specifications. The Camera is only a 2 Mega Pixel resolution which is very very limited in quality. It is a iPod with capabilites of holding 4 or 8 gigabytes, which is not sufficent for most people including me.
One can go out and buy a better verison of all of these for a very similar total price. True, it does add a convience factor of having it all in one place, but for $599 dollars? I don't think so.
Do I think that it will flop? No. I believe it will be the trendy product just like the iPod and will be wildly successful for those who have money to burn, also as the iPod when it was immediatley released. The reason is, Apple may not be the most successful computer company or operating system, but they are the best advertisers. It consistently makes you want this product no matter how ridiculous the price may be. Apple can make ketchup hip to a group of white gloved women. So kudos Apple and best of luck, but the iPhone is not for me.

Maglev - What I Want
To preface this post I will state that I have an EXTREME fear of flying. I am not sure why, but it is prevelent in my life.
Now we move to the heart of the post. I want the Maglev implemented in the United States. This would allow me to travel across parts of the country in a timely fashion while on the ground. The experts might interject and say, well you are actually levatatng due to the magnets. True, but I could handle being a few inches off the ground rather than thousands of feet.
The price does concern me, when building this track could cost in upwards of billions of dollars. What would this relate to ticket prices being? A million a ticket? Obviously not that outrageous but Im sure it will be expensive.
Others may question, are you not worried about a derailment? And the answer is simply, no. I am not. Why? I don't know. Call it personal preference, and if I find this more secure, I am sure that many others who dislike the idea of an engining breaking down at 30,000 feet, will find it too.
Other points that I find interesting and cool is that we have possibly moved into a new era of transportation. Could magents be the new medium for propulsion? What if cars began to operate on this system? Is it feasible, I do not know, just asking; What if?

Planning...Actually Worth The Time
After reading the title, many think OBVIOUSLY. However, it was not too long ago when this immature teenager completely disagreed. I was the a-typical procrastinator, who left all projects to the last few days. Up until my senior year in high school I operated by this mindset. It wasn't until a film class where I realized that planning paid off.
The handbook reading focused more on the importance of planning before writing a paper, however with my background in film I will relate it to film. Sitting down and planning out what you want to convey to the viewers through shots and movement will add a noticeable amount of coherence and enjoyment. If one does not plan and just goes for broke when the time comes to start writing or filming, they may find that nothing worth value is produced. It will be a meandering jumble of words and shots. However a simple brainstorm and begin to organize ideas the final product will increase in quality. This process will also lend to better development of the story.
Second point that I found to be extremely true in both writing papers and scripts. Focus on details. In a essay the details enforce the point one may being trying to present. In a script the details make it seem all the more real and allows people to identify with. No successful movie has a script that follows one person and sticks strictly to the overall plot line. There are always side stories that add humanesque details that create a much more realistic feeling.
I am now a addvocate of planning and would reccomend it to all. (Even though Im sure most people my age have already figured this out)

In Class Discussion 2.15.2007
As we were talking about various topics from bluetooth and alternative fuels for automobiles to Western education, we stumbled onto the topic of education and its recent standardization. From ACT's and SAT's to required cirriculum American education is catering towards the capitalist society we employ. We strive for what most percieve is a good education, but in reality is limiting the mind to professions that have a high salary or prestige status. Education systems around the country attempt to brainwash young minds to head in a path of a lawyer, doctor or engineer. The government further propels this notion by issuing standard tests that only cover topics that are mainly utilized in these mainstream professions.
So what happens when an individual is most talented in a topic that is considered "alternative" to most. I happen. My best talents are in visual arts and film, but no one tested me on that. My talents go unrecognized by most because the ACT or SAT ceases to have a visual arts section. I get it that thses tests serve a purpose to evaluate every student on a even platform. However, it only evaluates those who are status quo students. Those who want to be a lawyer, doctor or engineer. These tests show little about students that want to enter in culinary arts, music or film. Upon further examination and I just realized they basically do not test on any of the arts.
Which brings me to my final point. America is slowly removing itself from artistic minds. Is it because traditionally the field makes a considerable lesser amount of money, and as we know America is driven by wal-mart, fried food and MONEY.

Power and Place - Reaction to Education
After the first few sentences of Chapter Four authored by Daniel Wildcat in the Power and Place of Indian Education in America, I was completely in agreement. The point Wildcat conveys is that American students are pushed to learn "facts" not concepts. These facts are placed in the short term memory bank, which allows for the retainment for tests, but does not grasp an overall understanding. I had made this conncection within myself a few years back while in my high school U.S. History class. I received a A in the class but came away feeling that I could not put the time periods together to create an uniform experience. Exactly how the book describes it, I was able to remember facts and bits and pieces, but not relate them to one another.
At first I attributed this to my personal learning style (procrastination). However, now am switching the blame towards Western technology and thought. It is quite possible that the problem is larger than me, and that it has not just been publicly disclosed. If this information was released into a widespread audience, many individuals may be enlightented, as I was. In fact, maybe the realization of what Western thought has taught us will trigger a backlash into learning to understand concepts or as Wildcat calls it; The thirst for "wisdom."

Class Discussion 2.8.2007
In class we began a few discussions spawned off the topic of controversial scienctific and technologicals procedures. Stem Cell research was an obvious choice that was brought up, as it is undoubtley the "hottest" one in modern times. It was an interesting session espcially for me because being raised in a catholic household and attending church has pushed for the stoppage of stem-cell research. The side of me that is interested in technology and science wants to dive deeper into research and explore where the possibilites lead. What the in-class discussion is lend to me was updated knowledge. What I knew about stem cell research was that it had to be derived from an unborn fetus. So in the eyes of many it was destroying a life to possibly help another. What I learned on Thursday however was alternative ways of harvesting cells that are usuable for research. Cells extracted from the umbalical cord or from amniotic fluid in the placenta. This way research can be done and preserve all unborn life.
This is an intriguing procedure because it silences all critics that state religious beliefs in protest. I am fully for stem cell research in the sense that it does not terminate a possible life. I am unaware of all the possible outcomes that stem cell research can provide, but I am positive that they could save lives. Even if they do not save lives, but rather improve them I am eager to explore. However, the binding fact is that they do not end a possible life. If they are harvested from a piece of flesh or body that is unused I think it is a scientifical advantage that should be utilized.

Modern Society in Technology
After reading the suggested passage focusing on Control, Convience and Progress, one statement resonanted with me. It was mentioned finally in the conclusion that the human race is in a paradox between the use of technology and the critism of overuse of technology. There is the ongoing debate discussing that society is extremely technologically driven that we emerse ourselves so deep into the progression of new technologies. However, there is the other side of the coin, and the ongoing debate whether or not the society is too dependent on technology.
This topic began the gears turning in my head. I thought about a program that I viewed last year which was based on the possibilitly of a solar flare explosion. These are natural occurring instances that happen all the time, but have little or no effect on the earth. However, there is the possibility that a massive explosion could pass the Earth with power that it would mimic a large Electro-Magnetic Pulse. These EMP's would knock out all electricity and therefore all electronic devices. This would leave the World powerless and limp. Subways stopped underground unable to move. Street lights off. Cell Phones useless. Life in developed and industrialized regions paralyzed
My point from this story, is maybe we are too tech. Everyone is on the grid and expected to embrace this ability. Would it hurt to revert back to some self sustaining practices? The ability to rely soley on yourself is long passed, with the system that is utlized in Industralized societies. Interdependence is the only way of living. From genetically mutated kernels of corn, to stem cell research maybe we should as a soceity start to take a step back. I am a vigorous enthusiast of new technologies and even science, but maybe we take ourself and slow down before a solar flare turns the U.S. into a chaotic state.

The Future of Food
After viewing "The Future of Food" in my WRA class, I was astounded by some of the information presented. To start of the largest relavation was how Monsanto was relatively unknown to the common world, but in reality it acts quite similiar to Walmart. They are obviously different in the sense of their products, however identical in their business practices.
The second point that I was amazed to hear was the fact that many wartime activites spawned modern day insectcides. Nerve gases are directly linked to chemicals such as DDT or Agent Orange, which have been employed in the prevention of diseases or insects on plants. Also the fact that many of the fertilzers used today we originated from nitrogen bombs in the military.
Finally the last practice that I find unreasonable is the patenting of living organisms. The Percy Schmiscer case was a perfect example of how outlandish some of these acqusations seem. It is ridiculous to sue a person because seeds have blown off a truck or have been deposited by animals. Also to patent a specific gene located in breast cancer and sue educational facilities is unethical. To expect the youth of America, let alone the scienctists of America, to search for a cure of this human killer without having all of the genes available to research is ridiculous.

Evolution of Class
Today class was held despite the inability of our instructor to attend our physical classroom. Everyone attended and was able to easily communicate back and forth to the instrutor and fellow students. Now, at the current date and time it may not seem as such a huge feat. So what, we communicate to numerous people on a daily basis. However, I began to think how evolved classrooms at all educational levels have become.
To start off we had classrooms that encompassed all grades and were held in one room. The learned on old parchment and wrote with quills. Fast forward a few hundred years and now we are instantly connected to other students miles away via a virtual world. Papers are written digitally and submitted electronically.
Now a comparision to classes that our parents attended. TV was a budding resource rarley implement in the educational institution. Cable was never heard of, let alone improved into a lesson plan (Cable In The Classroom), and the internet was nothing more than a military idea.
Today as normal as it may seem to most, was a huge accomplishment and advancement. It was my first time attending a virtual class and the experience was pleasureable. I would embrace any possible opportunity to enroll in an online class in the future.

Citations...Not For Me
To preface this blog, I am not the biggest fan of reading. I truly had to push through many books in high school. Now, to read about citations, I really had to push. However, I went in with an optimistic mind, and convinced myself that maybe I will find something interesting about citations. I have never been more wrong.
It was required so I did finish the reading, but it took a while. I understand that citations are an integral part of writing both collegiate and professional papers, and even into photographs. Still realizing this, I have zero interest in them. I never will be a great writer, nor a professional one, I have accepted it. The reasons include my lack of ability and complete disdain for all technical aspects, i.e. Citations.

In Class Discussion 1.25.2007
In class we discussed the variables that ultimately determine what a person’s culture becomes. I had previously defined what constituted culture in my opinion, and my opinion was redefined after class. I said that culture is “what one believes in.” The base of the defintion still remains intact for me, however the details which are involved in that defintion where expanded on. I was not naïve, but did not realize how extensive the factors that determine culture range.
I know that this blog is basically a reiteration of a previous paper, however I was truly astonished as we continued the list. Ones that I was amazed that I did not think of were, Sexaul Orientation, Animals and War or Peace Time. All of these clearly decide culture, however got looked over when I was thinking of pieces.

Taxidermy: Technology of Preservation
On our Thursday trip to the Michigan State Museum we were instructed to browse around and look for a past technology to report on. After a quick look-see around the first floor I viewed numerous paintings and reports. Some stories were on slavery, others on the pioneers and still others on the origins of Michigan Agricultural College. What caught my eye however, was something that did not have a plastic plaque describing its history. What caught my eye was the 10-foot Grizzly Bear that was standing perfectly upright in the entrance.
Taxidermy I thought, there is an art. Not only an art but also a technology that has been employed for many years. A process that continues to become redefined in its manner, but ultimately stable in its outcome. I figured what a great topic to explore and delve deeper into, to have a greater grasp on.
As I researched further into this topic I was interested to find the process included freezing the deceased animal. Freezing the carcass is the first step, usually done in a large freezer. The taxidermist then removes the skin and creates a mold from the remaining carcass. The resulting cast then has the skin and fur reattached to create the appearance of a still frame of the animal. After this process is completely the eyes and teeth are replaced with synthetics.
To me this sounds like a fairly easy process that can be executed with a good amount of ease. However I am not ignorant, and realize this process is quite difficult and not for the faint of heart. Either way, it remains a job that must be done and one that is taken for granted. If it were not for these wonderful and talented people, how could anyone view the beautiful displays that litter museums across the globe? Thank you taxidermists, a real American hero.

1.18.07 In Class
Defining Science and Technology is a relatively easy task. Defining Technology and Culture however is a different matter. At first thought, these terms seem so different that they are easy to distingush. However, upon further examination similarities and dependencies are apparent. In my personal case, I was enlightened to a new level on this subject due to the in class lecture and reading. I have taken many of the technologies that are used on a daily basis for granted. What I found extremely, interesting was when we started naming things that we as a culture would not have if technology was not present, and even more so when we started to define "cyborg." I was naive to its true meaning, linking it to terminator status. Down to the medicines I ingest to pins that held my hand together for months, I am emersed in a society that everyone a cyborg. It is frightening at first, but it returns to reassuring to know that technology has provided the human race a prolonged quality life.
How About Critical Viewing
Today in class, the main topic we discussed was “critical reading.” Now, because of my heavy background in visuals, I am sometimes more concerned with “critical viewing.” I am majoring in telecommunications here at MSU, and have large interest in film. I also have experience, and a natural eye, for still frame photography. I come from a very artistically oriented family, all which whom are gifted with the abilities of free hand painting or drawing. I unfortunately am not one of them. This is where my interest in digital art has risen from. However, back to the topic of why critical viewing is equally important to critical reading. Like before, we have discussed that texts appear in several forms. However, paintings, photos and films do not often receive the recognition they deserve for the amount that can be extracted from them. Critically viewing a piece basically abides to the same principles of critical reading. The audience, is encouraged to view deeper than the surface, and search for the author’s prerogative. However, this is where the two start to split. In critical reading, an author can alter the way they describe an event through choice of words, therefore lending their own bias to the reader. In critical viewing, the way their style or motive is exhibited is through angles, lighting and composition. Viewing an image or film can provide several bits of information as critical reading does. One can infer not only purpose, but can derive who produced it, when it was produced and where it was produced. As cliché as an ending it may be, I completely support the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words.” It just depends if one watches hard enough to discover it.
